Moldy wall in a South Jordan, UT home
5 Effective Mold Remediation Strategies
Because it can destroy essential building materials, discovering black mold can be an alarming experience for any homeowner in South Jordan, UT. Extensive growth often indicates the presence of a severe moisture problem, such as a leaking pipe or excessive humidity. To remedy the situation, you may need to address water damage as well as conduct a thorough mold cleanup. Since airborne spores can cause additional contamination, you should employ a variety of strategies during the remediation process to isolate the fungus at its original site.
1. Seal Off Affected Area
Mold spores can spread easily. To minimize the risk of unintentionally contaminating other areas of your home, you should minimize exposure by erecting a plastic barricade and restricting access to the site.
2. Employ Air Purifiers
An air purifier can help eliminate black mold spores. To be efficient, however, the device must contain a HEPA filter. Because they are not certified to trap all microscopic contaminants, other filters may not serve a beneficial role during mold remediation.
3. Perform an Air Exchange
To further cleanse the air, you may also want to employ blower fans and an air pressure machine. These devices can extract contaminated air and exchange it with a fresh supply.
4. Utilize Antimicrobial Chemicals
Ridding the affected space of the unsightly fungus is the primary goal of every mold cleanup project. To help facilitate this, you can apply antimicrobial chemicals to contaminated areas.
5. Inspect Airducts
The fungus can also infiltrate your home’s HVAC ducts. As a precaution, you should inspect them for signs of visible mold and clean them accordingly. If possible, you may also want to close ducts near the contaminated zone and avoid running your air conditioner or heater during the cleanup process to restrict spores from accessing the system.
If you find black mold growing inside your home, taking prompt action is essential. Although tackling a remediation project may seem daunting, employing efficient strategies can minimize the risk of cross-contamination and help you successfully eliminate the problem.

Is Category 2 Water Damage Affecting Your Business?
12/31/2018 (Permalink)
It is important to keep your commercial property in Riverton, UT, clean and safe for your employees, clients, and customers. One way to do this is to identify and professionally clean up Category 2 water damage when it occurs. Once you've determined that you have unwanted water, a commercial building restoration service can properly locate the source of the leak and perform water pipe repair.
Identify Category 2 Water
Category 2 water, also known as gray water, is water that contains contaminants. While this water may not be as obviously unsanitary as Category 3 (or black) water, it can still make people very ill. Common sources of Category 2 water include the following:
• Broken pipes carrying water from appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers
• A leaking toilet
• A failed sump pump
It's important to note that Category 1 water can also turn into Category 2 water if it's ignored and allowed to stagnate or if it travels throughout your property. For example, Category 1 water that starts on the second floor of the building and travels through the walls and floors to the first floor can become Category 2 due to fungal growth.
Work Quickly To Clean Up Damage
It is important to take steps to quickly mitigate damage from Category 2 water. Immediately turn off your main water valve if you notice a leak or burst pipe. Next, soak up as much of the water as you can using disposable, absorbable materials. It is also important to relocate all property and furniture to a clean, dry area. Determine if water pipe repair is necessary and contact a professional company to dry flooded areas.
If left unattended, damage from Category 2 water can make you and your employees sick. Protect your business, your property, and your workforce by knowing how to identify this problem and who to call when it occurs.

Gaining a Better Understanding of Ice Storms
12/14/2018 (Permalink)
Ice storm in South Jordan,UT
Since you’ve been living in your South Jordan, UT, home, you’ve presumably come across your fair share of storms. However, a storm involving freezing rain can be a completely different kind of weather event that can leave you dealing with the aftermath of storm damage. Before you’re forced to face another intense ice catastrophe, it’s important to gain a greater understanding of what an ice storm is and the impact one can have on your residence.
? There is a difference between a snowstorm and an ice storm. Freezing rain differentiates from snow in that snow falls only when the temperature is consistently at below-freezing levels from the sky directly to contact with the ground. Contrastingly, ice can form on the ground even if the water initially falls from the sky as rain, due to variations in temperature from the warmer air above the ground to the subfreezing air close to the ground’s surface.
? Storms involving thick layers of ice can be highly dangerous. Ice can create problems in a plethora of ways, such as tree branches and power lines being weighed down, causing them to break or fall. Downed power lines means the loss of electricity, which can lead to areas of the home being affected like freezing pipes. Moreover, if strong winds are involved, hardened sheets of ice can be strewn throughout the air, potentially damaging your roof, windows, and more.
? Prepare for freezing storms ahead of time by stocking up on supplies. When a storm brings ice that lasts for days, it’s best to be prepared in advance. Stockpile things like batteries, flashlights, blankets, canned food, water, a first-aid kit and more to ensure you’re safe and secure during a freezing weather event.
Handling the Impact
After a storm passes, any damaging effects it had on your South Jordan, UT, home can be repaired by storm damage restoration technicians who are experienced with severe weather events. Once you’ve gained a better idea of what an ice storm is and the power it brings, preparing your home sooner rather than later is a great step towards protecting your residence.
Why Do Mitigation Experts Make Flood Cuts?
11/27/2018 (Permalink)
Flood cut after water damage in a Riverton,UT residence
A flood cut can reveal the extent of water damage after flooding as well as the severity of mold risk. Find out what the cut involves and why mitigation professionals find this method of detecting flood damage to be useful.
What Is a Flood Cut?
A flood cut is a procedure to determine the extent of water damage after a flood. These cuts
- Involve cutting out drywall
- Are made about one foot above the flood water level
- Reveal the presence of moisture behind a wall
If your residence has experienced flooding, a strategic cut can reveal whether flood water has permeated through building materials. Mitigation experts will need to tear out damp drywall or insulation, as these porous materials cannot be safely dried and will pose a contamination and mold risk.
How Does a Flood Cut Reveal Water Damage?
Flood cuts enable professionals to determine whether insulation has become damp. These cuts
- Test the condition of building materials
- Reveal insulation
- May expose the presence of mold
For all of these reasons, a flood cut is an easy way to determine how extensive the mitigation process will need to be. Homeowners should not attempt to make flood cuts, as the process may result in exposure to volatile organic compounds associated with mold growth.
How Can a Flood Cut Indicate Mold Risk?
A flood cut can help restoration experts determine the
- Amount of moisture
- Extent of contamination
- Likelihood of mold
If insulation is moist, a tear out is necessary to prevent mold. There is no way to dry out porous building materials. Drywall and insulation will need to be replaced after the space behind a wall thoroughly dries.
Schedule a consultation with mitigation and restoration professionals regarding flooding in your home in Riverton,UT. These experts can pump out water, clean, and disinfect the damaged area prior to making a flood cut.
Commercial Property: Protecting Your Assets with Commercial Insurance and Emergency Preparations

Fire remediation in a Herriman,UT commercial building
Commercial Insurance
Commercial insurance protects against numerous perils, such as theft, natural disaster, water and fire damage. While it is an incredibly valuable policy, many business owners don’t understand the fundamentals, factors or considerations that go into making a well-rounded policy. Additionally, while it is nice to have coverage in case of peril, it is also beneficial to have an emergency plan in place.
1. Cost of Insurance
While the price of commercial coverage may seem steep, it is necessary to understand risk and liability. Some businesses, such as railroads and manufacturers, will spend more on insurance because of the increased risk of usage. However, while the price is a concern when considering coverage, you should also consider the fact that commercial premiums are deductible.
2. Factors that Dictate Premiums
As stated previously, there is a correlation between risk and commercial insurance premiums, but there are several additional factors that play a role as well.
- Location
- Occupancy
- Construction
- Theft and fire protection
All of these elements combine to establish a premium. If your business is mainly constructed of fire-resistant materials and is also designed as an office building, then your premiums will be lower than an apartment building cheaply built.
3. Considerations for Additional Coverage
In addition to typical coverages, you may be interested in insuring several critical components of your building. These components may go beyond the building to the office equipment inside, inventory, signage, landscaping and even accounting records and other documents.
4. Preparations for Potential Disaster
Aside from insuring your property, you may want to prepare an emergency readiness plan with an emergency restoration specialist in the Herriman,UT, area. These plans will take effect immediately following a disaster, allowing these services to mitigate damage as quickly as possible, preventing further loss.
Commercial insurance can be a significant expense, but for those that understand its value, it is well worth it. However, beyond having the coverage in the event of a disaster, it is vital to mitigate further loss to both keep your coverage and reduce further damage.
Why Is My Mold Back? 3 Things You’re Doing Wrong
11/27/2018 (Permalink)
Moldy wall in a Bluffdale,UT business
You spent the time and money to get rid of mold, and you’re all ready to rest easy - until you see it’s back! Unfortunately, mold is a hardy little organism, and that means spot mold growth can linger unless every possible feeding source is eradicated. Read on to figure out just why that spot of mold keeps returning to your Bluffdale,UT, business.
Why Is Mold So Stubborn?
Mold has many unique biological characteristics that make it thrive well in nature. Mold spores:
- Survive harsh surroundings
- Are light and easily distributed through the air
That explains what makes mold so pesky. But why do you see the same spots of mold again and again?
You Didn’t Remove the Water Source
Mold loves water. Something as simple as an HVAC drip pan or an area near a poorly ventilated appliance can create the doorway to mold growth. If you keep seeing the same spot of mold, look for signs of water damage nearby.
You Have Poor Ventilation
Even if you can breathe easy in a building, it doesn’t mean the ventilation is ideal. Poor ventilation leaves moisture trapped in the space, and that’s a sure route to mold. Kitchens and bathrooms especially are high-humidity areas where proper ventilation should be a priority.
You’re Not Drying Things Out
Whether it’s a commercial kitchen or a carwash, many commercial buildings generate lots of wet towels and fabrics. When those aren’t hung up to dry out quickly, they become a magnet for mold. And remember, the spores spread. If you have a spot of mold that keeps returning, make sure you’re not putting wet towels near that location regularly.
Repeated cycles of mold growth can be frustrating, and sometimes there’s nothing you can do but call in mold professionals. Find your city’s mold remediation experts, and that mold spot will be gone in no time.
How to Clean a Gas Range
10/19/2018 (Permalink)
Large fire damage on a Draper,UT kitchen
A gas range may seem more difficult to clean than a glass top electric stove. In fact, these ranges typically require less scraping or specialized tools. Follow these seven range cleaning steps to safely clean your stove and eliminate any smoke smell.
1. Clean As You Go
Remove spatters and stains with a damp paper towel or washable cloth during and after cooking. This is the easiest way to prevent a range from becoming grimy and more difficult to deep clean.
2. Remove and Soak Grates
Take the grates off of the gas range and soak them in a sink filled with hot, soapy water. Wait several minutes before using a cleaning brush or old toothbrush to scrub off debris.
3. Spray and Wipe
Wipe off any crumbs or debris and then spray the surface with a mixture of one part white vinegar to one part water. Wait several minutes before wiping. Use soap or a specialized cleaning product for severe stains.
4. Scrub Stains
Make circular motions with the small cleaning brush. Wipe up debris with a damp paper towel or cleaning cloth.
5. Remove and Soak Burner Caps
Once the rest of the stove is clean and dry, remove the burner caps. Soak and scrub stains off of these components.
6. Lift and Clean Burner Heads
Lift straight up on burner heads and clean underneath. Use a needle or pin to clear out notches.
7. Lift and Vacuum the Range
Release the spring hinges or pins to lift the range. Use a vacuum attachment to remove crumbs from inside of the range.
These seven range cleaning methods can help to keep your gas range clean and reduce the risk and severity of grease fires. If a fire does start in the kitchen of your home in Draper, UT, seek the equipment and expertise of mitigation and restoration professionals.
Business Ownership 101: Should I Have a Flood Policy?
10/12/2018 (Permalink)
Get your flood insurance in Daybreak,UT
When it comes to who needs to buy flood insurance, most business owners in Daybreak,UT think of those in high-risk, flood plain areas. But experts say inlets and small creeks can swell as much as a mighty river under heavy rains, and businesses even remotely close to floodplains should prepare themselves. Not convinced you need commercial insurance for flooding? Here are reasons to bite the bullet.
Because Standard Insurance Won’t Cover Flood Damage
Many business owners incorrectly believe their standard insurance covers flood damage. While some policies cover things like sewer backups, damage from flooding is typically covered under a separate policy. That means if you don’t pay for a flood policy and a hurricane hits, you’re out of luck.
Because Risk Extends Past the Flood Plain
Many people think since they are on a hill or are inland, far from the coast, that they aren’t threatened by flooding. But experts say living within a 20-mile radius of a floodplain can make you just as susceptible to those right in the middle of the high-risk area. They point to land that can quickly become water choked in heavy rains, leading to flash flooding.
Because Costs for the Uninsured Are Pretty Hefty
Unfortunately, the options are limited to avoid coming out of pocket if you are hit with flood damage. FEMA may provide some limited coverage but typically not enough to cover all losses. The good news is, there are lots of options when it comes to buying a flood policy. The National Flood Insurance Program underwrites the bulk of the nation’s flood insurance policies and there are many providers of commercial insurance policies.
By the time the storm hits, it’s too late to think about flood insurance. Get your flood-ready commercial insurance policy today and rest assured that if the next record-setting storm hits close to home, you’re prepared for the worst.
How to Drain a Flooded Basement
10/5/2018 (Permalink)
Flood damage in a South Jordan,UT home
Flood insurance coverage is a blessing if you have it, but even if you do, there is still the issue of water removal after a basement flood. The tips and tools below can help make this type of cleanup less of a headache and more approachable.
1. Wait for Exterior Water to Recede
While it is troubling to see water where there shouldn’t be, you should wait for the exterior water level to recede before attempting to pump out your basement after a flood. If you do not wait, then everything you pump out will likely recollect in your basement. Once water levels have receded, you can safely remove standing water without the worry of reflooding.
2. Rent a Submersible Pump for Deeper Floods
If the basement flood is more than a foot deep, you may want to rent or purchase a submersible pump, which will allow you to submerge the pump in the lowest area of the flood and, connecting a drainage hose, begin evacuating the water. Depending on the overall area of your basement, it may be more efficient to rent a couple of pumps to speed up the process.
3. Use a Wet/Dry Vac for Shallower Floods
For a shallower flooded basement, you can use a wet/dry vac to suck up excess water. It is better to use these vacuums in shallower floods because the process of bringing them up the stairs when full can be daunting. Use wet/dry vacs when the flooded area is contained to a small space and no deeper than an inch. If it is a larger space, you may want to use a pump, although you do not necessarily have to use a submersible pump for shallow floods.
4. Hire a Professional
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the process of floodwater removal, then you can hire a flood cleanup professional in South Jordan, UT, to assist you. These specialists will have the proper equipment and expertise to help you resolve your flood woes quickly and efficiently.
A basement flood can be devastating. Fortunately, there are tools and even companies that can make the flood cleanup process less stressful and more manageable.

Can Water-Damaged Electronics Be Fixed?
9/25/2018 (Permalink)
Air mover on a water loss in Riverton, UT
Water can make flooded electronics or devices exposed to leaks or spills unstable. Ions such as sodium or chloride can cause electronics to short out and lead to corrosion. If you are dealing with electronic damage due to water in a commercial property in Riverton, UT, consider the following factors to determine whether devices can be restored or should be replaced.
How Extensive Is the Damage?
Beyond initial exposure to water, other sources of damage include the following.
Corrosion
Dead LCD screens
Short-circuiting
Ruined batteries
Water damage may be less extensive if a device is powered off when exposure occurs. Minerals in water can make a connection in a device that is turned on, or that current is running through, and cause short-circuiting that will ruin flooded electronics. If a device is powered off and no current is running through, you may be able to thoroughly dry the water and restore the device.
Take Steps To Repair the Device
Exercise caution when working on devices that have previously been exposed to flooding, leaks, or spills, as short-circuiting can still occur. The best approach to repairing electronics with water damage is to rely on the expertise of commercial water damage restoration experts.
If you want to undertake restoration yourself, try to get handheld devices as dry as possible. You may want to flush larger appliances or devices with clean, pure water free from ions to dislodge sediment. Corrosion will increase depending on the duration of time a device has been exposed to water. Use a cotton swab dipped in cleaning solution, such as isopropyl alcohol, to clean crust off connectors or charging ports.
Avoid Making Damage Worse
You may undermine the ability of skilled professionals to restore a device by attempting restoration on your own. It is usually the best idea to turn flooded electronics over to restoration specialists in Riverton, UT.
How To Prepare Your Home for a Major Storm
9/18/2018 (Permalink)
Roof damage by severe storm in Draper, UT
If you're a homeowner in Draper, UT, major storms can be a concern. It's important that you know how to protect your home from wind damage and flood water. By following the steps outlined below, you can reduce the amount of harm done and save time and money after the storm has passed.
1. Make Sure You Have Coverage
Talk to your insurance agent to make sure you have the proper coverage. Normally, homeowners' insurance won't cover wind and water damage, so you may need to purchase a separate policy. Make sure to have an inventory of your valuables by taking pictures or videos and noting the value of each item. This is important to ensure that you are reimbursed properly if flood water should damage your home.
2. Secure Your Landscaping
Check the trees and shrubbery around your house. Dead tree branches can break loose in a storm and damage siding or break windows. A tree with shallow roots can come loose from the ground and smash into your house or car. You may want to contact an arborist to do an inspection. Do a good job of trimming to lessen the possibility of flying debris and help plants resist the wind during the storm. Tie down any small shrubs or trees to keep them from coming loose.
3. Safeguard Your Home
Keep gutters clear of all debris and make necessary repairs. Have a plan to move outdoor furniture inside or strap it down. You may want to protect windows and doors with temporary measures like wind shutters and plywood. Move furniture and carpeting to higher ground and make sure items like electronics and appliances are elevated away from rising water. If you have a sump pump, make sure it's in shape to deal with any flood water that might enter the basement.
While there are many steps you can take on your own to safeguard your home, you may want to consult with a professional. Hopefully, you'll never have to deal with a wind-damaged or flooded building after a bad storm. However, by taking a few precautions ahead of time, you can be prepared for the worst.

If there is a wet spot or high levels of humidity in your home, mold, including black mold, could get tracked in and begin establishing a colony.
The Right Conditions for Mold Growth
There are several common moisture problems that could increase the risk of your mold in your home, including
- Aging appliances
- Broken pipes
- Broken water supply line
- Flooding
- Hidden leaks
- High humidity
It's impossible to completely get rid of all the mold and spores in your home. After all, you're probably tracking it in on a regular basis. However, there are many things you can do to decrease the risk of black mold development.
Clean Up Existing Mold
The first step is to conduct a thorough mold cleanup process. Depending on the severity of the problem, you may be able to do this yourself. If the affected area covers a large space, if it's difficult to find the source of the growth, or if you're not confident that you've found all of the mold, it's best to contact a mold remediation professional.
Cut Down the Moisture in Your Home
The next step is to focus on controlling your moisture problem. This means responding immediately whenever you find a dripping pipe or leaking house. Don't forget to look into dark, moist areas, such as inside your HVAC system. If left alone, these situations could lead to extensive damage and long-term consequences. Your quick response can save you from further expenses related to those damages. Although mold exists naturally, you can control black mold growth in your home with a quick response to any areas of moisture.
What To Ask Your Agent About Property Insurance
8/27/2018 (Permalink)
Damage fire in the kitchen at a Riverton, UT home
When you are purchasing commercial insurance for your property in Riverton, UT, you want to make sure your building has as much protection as you can get. It is also important to understand the details of your policies. Property insurance, for example, usually covers most natural disasters, but it doesn't often cover floods. Here are some questions to ask your insurance agent about property insurance.
What Factors Influence the Cost?
Before you sign on the dotted line, it's good to know what you're getting into. There are several factors that affect your property insurance premiums:
- Construction materials
- Installation of anti-theft and/or a fire sprinkler system
- Intended use
- Fire protection of the city where it's located
The more precautions you have taken to resist fire, such as fire-resistant building materials or a fire suppression system, the less expensive your property expenses are likely to be.
What Is Covered?
Most fire damage is covered by the property policy in your commercial insurance package. The policy also covers damages caused by many extreme weather, such as high winds, hail, snow drifts or lightning. The policy is likely to pay for mitigation and restoration services as well as temporary relocation, if necessary. It even includes some liability protection in the event that a person other than the property owner or tenant is injured and sues for damages.
What Isn't Covered?
If property owners are injured on their own property, their medical bills are not covered since the property is primarily their responsibility. Most property policies do not cover earthquakes or floods, particularly if the building is located in an area known for those phenomena. You will need to buy separate policies for those.
Your commercial insurance package is designed to protect you from as many financial woes as possible. Your property policy can protect the building, the items within it or maybe even both.
Exterior Inspection Tips for Your Commercial Property
8/20/2018 (Permalink)
Flooding damage in a Draper, UT library
Owning a commercial property is a big responsibility. You must be vigilant to make sure that your building in Draper, UT, is a safe place for occupants to enter. Making a building inspection a regular part of your exterior maintenance plan is a good way to ensure that this happens. Here are some tips on what to look for during your inspection.
Walls
To keep your building maintained properly, you must pay attention to the exterior walls. Look for signs of damage. Even regular wear and tear can become a problem over time, making it necessary to hire restoration specialists to repair your building. Pay particular attention to the following issues:
- Water and air infiltration points
- Paint inconsistencies
- Holes or weak spots, particularly where different parts of the wall connect
All problems with your walls can't easily be seen with the naked eye, so it's important to test the wall for issues, especially when it comes to areas where air or water could enter.
Cladding
Cladding is the coating on the structure that provides insulation and resistance to outdoor elements. It also makes the building look nicer. Your exterior maintenance plan should include an inspection of the cladding to make sure there are no chips, dents or holes in it. If left unchecked, these problems that may seem minor at first can lead to bigger issues, because they leave your building unprotected.
Windows
Inspecting your windows and initiating necessary repairs is a great way to save on energy costs. It is also important, however, for protecting the building from water that might seep into weak weather stripping or a broken seal. Make sure your windows have proper insulation so that air and water stay out of your building.
When a storm rages and your building is not able to withstand it, the breakdown can often be traced back to something missed because exterior maintenance was neglected. Regular building inspections can help you identify and resolve problems before extreme weather strikes.

While the prospect of a water leak in your home might be terrifying, the recovery process is not as hard or lengthy as you might think. There are a few things you should do immediately after you’ve had bursting pipes in your home to make cleanup easier:
- Disconnect the power and remove any electronics from the area.
- Remove as much standing water as possible using buckets and towels.
- Dry the affected area thoroughly; open windows and turn on fans for the best air circulation.
- Place any wet objects and furniture to dry in a room with good air flow, out of the sun.
- Contact a restoration specialist to assess the extent of the damage as soon as possible.
The Speed of Recovery
Recovery from water damage usually takes three to five days, although it may take between seven and 10 days if you have wood floors. Any broken items should be removed and discarded safely, whereas any salvageable items should be hung to dry indoors so they won’t be affected by sunlight. Items such as books or clothes should only be put away again once they are truly dry to avoid any mold growth.
As for recovery of the house itself, the time required will depend on the extent of the damage. While It may not take long to fix a broken pipe, drywall, floors, carpet and other surfaces need thorough drying and disinfection to prevent further issues.
The Dangers of Water Damage
If your home was subject to damage from a natural disaster or bursting pipes, it may be at risk for a number of potentially dangerous consequences:
- Contaminated water
- Mold infestation
- Structural damage
- Property damage
To avoid these issues, follow the steps above and find a specialist in South Jordan, UT, who can help you assess your home for any unseen issues. Bursting pipes can’t always be prevented, but a restoration specialist will help you feel secure in your home knowing that you’re protected against greater risks.
How To Safely Eliminate Mold
7/26/2018 (Permalink)
Mold can cause a major headache for your business. However, it is possible to combat this problem directly. Prior to conducting any cleanup, it is vital to find the right equipment to protect yourself and the rest of your business from further contamination.
• Masks
Protective respirators are essential gear, as spores can linger in the air during the removal process. Look for a protective mask with a high filter efficiency. The higher the number, the higher the protection level. For example, a mask with a label of 80 will prevent 80 percent of spore inhalation. Experts recommend a N-95 or P-100 mask.
• Googles
During cleanup you will likely use a number of cleaning supplies. Guarding your eyes from these chemicals is important. Purchasing safety googles prevents tiny spores and chemicals from injuring your eyesight.
• Gloves
In the same way that you shield your eyes, covering your hands and arms is a necessary precaution during removal. Protect your hands with correctly fitting rubber gloves throughout the entire process. Make sure to properly dispose of each pair to prevent contamination of clean surfaces.
• Shoe Covers or Protective Suits
Shoe covers can prevent spore transfer throughout the whole building. Remember to remove and replace shoe covers every time you go in and out of a mold-infested room. If you really want to avoid contact with any and every hazardous material, consider purchasing a full-body protective suit. Both of these items can be purchased online and in stores. However, in case of a serious mold infestation, it may be best to contact mold disposal experts so that they can conduct a large-scale cleanup safely.
Any mold cleanup can be daunting to a business owner in South Jordan, UT. Regardless if it is a small mold growth or a large-scale outbreak, wearing the proper protective tools is a vital step in fighting off this troublesome fungus. With the help of all this equipment, you can protect your business’s future as well as yourself and your employees.

Is There a Right Way to Use Candles in Your Home?
7/26/2018 (Permalink)
Many homeowners in South Jordan, UT, like to burn candles. Candles can help make a room smell nice and give a pleasant aura. Even though these home fragrance products are popular, you need to be aware of the potential dangers of candle fire. If left unattended, you may end up having to deal with a residential fire, which means you'll need to call a home fire cleanup crew. Use these tips to make sure you use candles in as safe a manner as possible:
• Distance: Candles should not be lit if they are too close to any combustible materials. This can include drapes, bedding or upholstery. When you set your candle down, try to keep it at least one foot from anything that can catch on fire.
• Surface: You also have to think about the surface you put your home fragrance product on. The candle holder should be sturdy, and you should put it on a flat, uncluttered surface.
• Location: While it may be tempting to light a candle in your bedroom, this part of the home is very susceptible to a candle fire. Falling asleep leaves the small flame unattended. You should try to avoid lighting candles in areas where you may fall asleep.
• Children: If children live in the home, it can be even more dangerous to light candles. A child should not be left unattended in a room with a burning candle. You should also try to keep lighters and matches out of their reach to avoid the need for a smoke cleanup.
• Time: The longer you let a candle burn, the closer the wick gets to the surface of the container. You should avoid allowing the candle to burn all the way down.
Candles can be a pleasant product to use in your home. However, if you leave them unattended or burn them too close to other objects, you may end up with a candle fire blazing in your South Jordan, UT, house.

Addressing Storm Damage
7/26/2018 (Permalink)
Storm damage is a concern to homeowners, but for residents in South Jordan, UT, high winds and falling hail might specifically put you in need of roof repair. The roof is the most exposed element of a house, making it susceptible to damage. Always wait until a storm has passed before taking the following steps to address storm damage.
1. Check for exterior damage.
Carefully exit your home and check around the yard for fallen limbs, missing tiles, or scattered debris. Look for branches that might have been knocked onto your roof affecting chimney bricks or satellite dish locations. Check roof edges, trim, vent locations or flashing for wind damage, looking for spots where water can seep in.
Hail damage requires a closer inspection of the roof, but keep safety a priority. Roof repair might be necessary if dark or soft spots are found, roofing felt is exposed and multiple shingles are dimpled, cracked or broken.
2. Check for interior damage.
If high winds or hail have done roof damage, a check of your attic or ceiling is necessary. Examine molding or walls for stains that are brown or rust colored, indicating a leak in the roof. If your paint is peeling or bubbling, water could be seeping in and may be trapped between the walls.
3. Address damage locations.
You can keep the damage to a minimum by addressing problems as quickly as possible. Use a shop vac to clean up bigger pools of water, while well-placed fans can begin drying walls or insulation. Replace weakened framing support or roofing tiles if able, covering the inside floor beneath with drop cloths or buckets to maintain interior protection. You can use tarps or boards to cover roof locations that require more extensive work.
Roof repair is an unfortunate situation that storms with high winds and hail can cause homeowners. Be sure to safely inspect storm damage, moving on to address the areas as you are able. For bigger jobs, call in the experts to lend a hand.

Thawing Frozen Pipes Using 4 Straightforward Steps
6/20/2018 (Permalink)
Winter brings the joys of the holiday season, but there’s nothing merry about frozen pipes at your South Jordan, UT, business. Not only is it impossible to get usable water from the pipe, the breaking of a frozen pipe can lead to costly water damage. Treating frozen pipes properly with these four steps is necessary to minimize damage.
1. Check That It’s a Frozen Pipe.
Despite it being winter, water that won’t come out of a faucet doesn’t always mean there’s a frozen pipe. You could instead be dealing with broken pipes. Trace where the pipes go and make sure that there are no leaks that would need water cleanup.
2. Open the Faucet for Flow.
Once you have verified that the pipe is frozen, it’s time to begin thawing. Steam and water will be released while the pipe thaws, so you need a running faucet to clear this out. Leaving the faucet open moves water through the pipe to make unfreezing speedier when the water and ice try to match temperatures.
3. Heat the Pipe Using a Safe Source.
Using a dangerous heat source or a safe one improperly can lead to problems like fire damage to your business. It’s important to first ensure the area around the frozen pipe is clear of anything flammable.
After establishing a perimeter, you can use a hair dryer or a portable space heater. Alternatively, you can wrap the pipe in an electric heating pad or towel soaked in hot water. It is strongly advised to never use anything with an open, exposed flame.
Keep the heat on the pipe until water flows at full power once more. If flow cannot be restored, seek out a local plumber.
4. Check Your Property for Damage.
There may still be other frozen pipes, so repeat the first three steps until all of them are treated. During your inspection, you may discover water damage from the weather or an improperly thawed pipe. A trained water damage recovery company can remove this water from your commercial property. It’s peace of mind to know that frozen pipes can be fixed yourself with these steps or professionally treated if they become more problematic.

Flood Damage: Your Responsibilities as a Renter
6/15/2018 (Permalink)
Despite the tragic wildfires raging through California and the tornadoes touching down in that infamous tornado alley, the most common natural disaster in America is floods. Most homeowners know the best protection against flood damage is insurance, but what if you’re a renter? What are your responsibilities? What are the landlord’s? Will your renter’s insurance cover all the damage?
The Landlord.
To fully understand the responsibilities of a renter in the case of flood damage, it’s important to start with the landlord. Rented property must be habitable to be legally rented, so if there is a flood, the landlord is responsible for the repair of structural damage to the apartment or house.
This includes but is not limited to damage to these areas:
• Ceiling
• Walls
• Carpeting
• Doors
It’s also important to check the lease agreement, as this may have already ironed out the rights and responsibilities of the landlord versus the tenant in the case of a flood.
The Tenant.
Unfortunately for renters, the landlord is not legally responsible for personal items owned by the tenant. So, if computers, television sets, passports or work documents are damaged, the responsibility lies with the tenant, unless otherwise specified in the lease or unless the tenant can prove that the flood damage was due to the negligence of the landlord. If the home is still habitable, the tenant is also responsible for continued payments of rent.
To offset these costs, tenants should choose wisely when purchasing renter’s insurance. Some plans only cover the bare minimum, but others may include useful perks like covering rent for another home in the same price range during repairs and replacing prized possessions.
Renter’s insurance doesn’t always cover all the damage from floods. Because of this, good insurance coverage is often the difference between homelessness after a flood and a smooth recovery. However, perhaps even more important than this is knowing your rights and responsibilities as a tenant of a rented home in South Jordan, UT.

Get Proactive and Speed Up the Claim Process
6/15/2018 (Permalink)
When a storm causes structural damage to your home, it’s normal to feel like things may never be the same again. It makes sense that you’d rather spend your time burrito-wrapped in a blanket instead of playing phone-tag with every contractor in your South Jordan, UT. However, the more committed and vigorous you are in getting information for your home adjuster, the more straightforward the insurance claim process will be.
The First Steps To Take When the Storm Passes.
Once the storm has run its course, there are a few steps you want to take to put yourself in the best position for the rest of the process. Before your insurance company sends an adjuster for a visit, try to conquer the following:
1. Contact your insurance company immediately. Ask questions: Will this damage be covered under my policy? How long does it take to process a claim? How long will I have to file a claim?
2. Make temporary repairs. Since payment for temporary repairs are part of the total settlement, you want to take reasonable measures to protect your home from further damage. Saving receipts to send to your insurance company for reimbursement is always a good idea.
3. Keep all receipts if you must relocate. Documentation is your best friend in this situation.
Preparing for the Adjuster’s Visit.
Home adjusters are trained to assess the damage, but you’ll look extra savvy (and make their job a bit easier) if you have the following handy when they show up:
1. Detailed inventory of ruined/demolished items (photos, items themselves, videos)
2. Written offers from licensed contractors, including prices on a straight-line basis, and materials to be used
3. Any cases of structural damage to your home, tool shed, garage, or in-ground pool
4. Copies of all documents relating to the incident
Planning for a disaster might seem pessimistic. But the truth is, many people are not prepared when trouble strikes. In a situation where your home is on the line, it’s better to know what to do when a home adjuster arrives.

Do your pipes freeze during winter storms?
5/31/2018 (Permalink)
Pipes freezing during cold South Jordan Utah weather.
Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem
Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.
Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.
Preventing Frozen Pipes
Before the onset of cold weather, prevent freezing of these water supply lines and pipes by following these recommendations:
- Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
- Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
- Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
- Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
Being prepared and informed may help you avoid messy and often expensive repairs. Check back with our blog later for more ideas to help prevent and thaw frozen pipes.

Numerous homes South Jordan and North Draper, UT, have mold. Actually, numerous studies expose that almost every residence has a microbial growth dilemma, of some form. On the other hand, many are not the hazardous kind. It is simple to test your residence to determine if you do indeed, find a problem to be worried about. Oftentimes the proprietor is unaware of the mold situation, until a smelly odor is detected, for example, an odor that might be coming from the area of the kitchen. Pipe leaks might go undetected for awhile, if they’re slow leaks. This situation creates a perfect occasion for microbial growth to start to cultivate unobserved in your residence. Unobserved growth can turn out to be very costly to alleviate. Some proprietors are billed several thousands of dollars to care for unnoticed growth.
If you think that you could have fungus mounting in your residence, you can employ an inspection team to examine your residence and perform mold cleanup treatment. The standard test can be as much as $1,000. Conversely, there are home test kits, sold over the counter. Kits can be as high as $50. However, several of these test kits are notorious to be untrustworthy indications of a problem being there.
If you do find that a fungus is present in your residence, its sensible to not allow dread to control you. If the location is tiny that you notice a smelly odor in, for example, only around a 10 foot location, it might be feasible to carry out mold cleanup on your own and not use a professional. There are many websites that make clear how to attain results yourself. Essentially, the process relies on water and bleach, in an area with good ventilation.
However, if the problem needs an Environmental Hygienist, take heed of scammers. Numerous services presented might use price-gouging or otherwise, not in fact be familiar with what they claim to be. It is wise to evade someone conducting services out of their car trunk and trust your intuition. Several individuals recommend that you look for no less than 3 businesses to get treatment pricing comparisons. However, a genuine quote is not easy to achieve without using an Environmental Hygienist to enter your home, and perform a test, first. Be confident that the service that you hire, is certified, licensed and that they’ve been in service for many years.

Properly Using a Fire Extinguisher To Fight a Kitchen Fire
5/21/2018 (Permalink)
The only thing worse than having to face a kitchen fire in your business is facing one unprepared. Fortunately, the fire extinguisher is not only the best tool to stop a fire; it is also extremely easy to use. Here are four essential tips to help you operate one. Hopefully you’ll never need to, but being able to do so properly could save your building in South Jordan, UT.
1) Pull the Pin on the Handle
Each unit has a pin located directly at the end of the handle. Wrap your index finger around the pin and squeeze it in a “trigger-pulling” motion. The pin should come out quite easily.
2) Aim
After the pin is out, turn the fire extinguisher around so the handle is facing you. This means the nozzle will be pointed towards the fire. Aim the nozzle low, at the base of the fire, not at the top of it.
3) Squeeze
After you’ve aimed the nozzle, you’re ready to use your unit to put the fire out. Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing material. It will shoot out in a steady, forceful stream. It will not require a great deal of strength to navigate.
4) Sweep
Moving the whole unit, sweep the hose nozzle horizontally across the base of the fire and continue to move back and forth until the blaze is out. Remember: You are aiming at the base of the flames, not the tip or the middle of them.
Facing a kitchen fire in South Jordan, UT, may be one of the most frightening experiences of your life. But if you are prepared and know how to use a fire extinguisher properly, your fear will quickly subside. You’ll be able to spring into motion, and your quick action could protect your business from fire damage and possibly save the lives of your co-workers!

Understanding Your Mold Coverage
5/14/2018 (Permalink)
Understanding Your Mold Coverage
You purchase insurance for your home in South Jordan, UT, to protect it and save yourself the cost of repairing damages. Mold issues can lower property value and even make a home almost impossible to sell. Most homeowner’s policies, however, do not cover the services of mold remediation specialists. Even if your policy does offer some type of mold coverage, there is usually a pretty low cap to the amount of your potential payout. Since fungus growth can often be prevented, its presence tends to be seen as more the fault of the homeowner than as a circumstance beyond one’s control.
Mold Prevention
Even if you have mold insurance or a policy that includes mold remediation, you need to be able to prove that you have done everything to prevent the problem from occurring. You can protect your home from mold simply by following some key prevention tips:
• Check indoor water sources for leaks frequently.
• Fix problems you find immediately.
• Lower the humidity of your home.
• Watch for condensation or standing water.
• Ventilate bathrooms, laundry rooms and attics appropriately.
Guarding against excess water can inhibit fungus growth and thereby decrease the need for an insurance policy that covers it. Prevention is the best way to protect your home in South Jordan, UT, from damage caused by mold.
Mold Coverage
An extensive mold problem can appear quickly, but there are usually extenuating circumstances that lead up to it, making it difficult to get insurance to cover the cost of remediation. Any problem that could have been foreseen or halted at its early stages is less likely to warrant an adjuster’s approval. If you believe that your mold issue is an exception, it is a good idea to enlist mold remediation technicians to back up your reasoning when the adjuster arrives.
No one likes to see fungus growth in their homes, nor does one like the bad news that it probably won’t be something their insurance covers. With proper prevention techniques or the expert opinion of a certified technician, you may be able to avoid the high out-of-pocket cost of mold remediation.

Through fire restoration, it is possible to salvage some of your belongings and treasures. Consider guiding your actions by these three S’s—safety, swiftness and smarts.
1. Safety is always first. Upon entering your impaired residence, be aware of unsafe floors, walls and ceilings weakened by fire or water. Do not touch damaged items. Contact a reputable and expert business that handles fire restoration in South Jordan, UT, as soon as possible to increase your chances of salvaging any items.
3. When it comes to emergencies, it is especially important to keep your smarts. This means that you ensure you are dealing with knowledgeable, trustworthy and professional people every step of the way, from reporting your damage to smoke cleaning and restoring your home. While your dwelling is uninhabitable, report it to police so they can help patrol the area if possible. Cover any broken windows or outside walls exposing the interior. Smarts also includes taking care of yourself. There are many nonprofit organizations and churches in South Jordan, UT, that offer counseling, food and clothing to individuals who have been through similar tragedies.

The More You Know About Mold, the Better You Can Prevent It

Many building and structural issues take months or even years to develop and grow worse, but mold growth moves faster. Fortunately, there are easy mold prevention steps you can take to protect your building before the South Jordan, UT, mold cleanup team arrives:
• Examine the area to determine whether it is safe to enter.
• If the affected area is structurally sound and free of contaminated water, take measures to protect your furniture by placing foil beneath the legs and wrapping pieces in plastic.

• If a flood is the source of the damage, shut off the electricity and gas lines.
• If you are not forced to turn off the power, set up a dehumidifier in the affected area.
• Store affected papers and other valuables in the freezer, as an expert may be able to restore them.
• Call a remediation team if you have not already done so.

Once they find moisture, they become a problem. This is especially true in areas of high humidity.
Mold prevention doesn’t have to be difficult, and you can take steps to avoid serious damage until the South Jordan, UT, mold remediation team arrives. Keeping the following damage tips in mind may help you take steps to protect your business until a professional water cleanup and restoration service arrives.
1. Start in the Attic
Once the building has been deemed safe to enter, head up to the attic to begin the drying process. If the flood occurred because a pipe burst in this room, make sure the water is turned off and the ruined pipe is no longer leaking. Open any windows in the room and bring in fans to lower the humidity levels, which can slow the development of mold.
2. Move Inventory From Upper Floors
One of the most important cleaning tips you can follow during flood cleanup is to move wet inventory or heavy objects from the upper floors. Not only will this allow you to store them for restoration later, but moving wet items can reduce stress on floors and allow you to dry them with more efficiency.
3. Use Window Fans
Using window fans in affected rooms can lower moisture levels and prevent wood structures and items from swelling or warping. This may also speed up the drying process and bring fresh air into the building. Try to provide the room with as much air circulation as possible.
4. Take Your Time
When it comes to damage tips, few are as important as taking the time to dry your building slowly. Forcing air into flooded areas may eventually cause warping or dry rot. Dry rooms with consistent circulation and bring humidity levels down slowly to avoid serious structural damage later on.
When flooding affects your commercial building in South Jordan, UT, you may not know where to begin when it comes to drying it properly. However, keeping a few water damage tips in mind can help you begin the process as you wait for professional help to arrive.

3/28/2018 (Permalink)

The fungus can spread quickly from the furniture to other parts of your house.
Whether you are dealing with black mold or any other form of fungus, you want your South Jordan, UT, house to be properly restored. Without the right mold cleanup steps, you may be dealing with mold for a long time. Taking half-measures to deal with the fungus will not help you get rid of the issue. 3/24/2018 (Permalink)
The water heater in your South Jordan, UT, home can be a vital piece of equipment when it comes to providing your family with hot water for cleaning and bathing. Despite its importance, you may not give it much thought unless it acts up. The sounds a unit makes can be an indication of a problem, and there are several different noises you can listen for if you suspect a malfunction.

You may be able to chase down the noise by listening closely when someone turns on the water in the kitchen or bathroom.
2. Banging
Noisy pipes can be common in older homes, and banging sounds that emit from your water heater usually occur if the unit is not bolted down properly or if pipes move or jerk suddenly when the water in your home is turned on or off. 3. Crackling or Popping
If you hear crackling, rumbling or popping as your water heats up, this may be a sign that sediment has collected inside your unit. This can be especially true of older units or those that have never been serviced. Calling in a professional restoration company to perform a water heater flush can eliminate these sounds. • Increased customer confidence
• Decreased risk of injury or death
• A competitive edge
• Security of the supply chain and order fulfilment
• Business resilience
• Reduced financial losses
A business continuity plan establishes the steps and procedures administrators and employees should follow when major disruptions occur, including natural disasters and man-made attacks on the business. The plan covers steps to take for the protection of human resources, inventory, and assets. Before it’s possible to establish a plan, it is necessary to identify areas of vulnerability and potential loss.
Creating a Continuity Plan
The first step in creating an effective plan is to identify the scope of the potential disaster. The second step is to identify crucial business areas and vital functions. The next step is outlining links between those areas and functions, giving special attention to functions that may suffer when one area of business is disrupted. The fourth step of this process is to determine how long it is acceptable for any critical functions to go down. Finally, put together the plan for maintaining core business operations during the course of flooding, snow storms, or burst pipes and a plan for bringing the business fully back into operation as storm damage and losses are assessed.
Testing the Plan
After creating the plan, it’s necessary to run a simulation to establish whether the plan fulfills its purpose. It’s best to put the plan through a challenging series of tests to improve the level of preparation. Most experts recommend testing two to four times a year. 3 Tips for Preventing Mold Growth in Your Business
2/21/2018 (Permalink)
There are many ways for professionals to remediate the impact of water damage. Mold growth can occur within 24 hours of a flood, so experts in South Jordan, UT need to get to work immediately to protect your building. However, commercial property owners should invest in preventing mold in the first place rather than waiting until it actually occurs. While you may not be able to stop mold from growing entirely, you can reduce the likelihood through some simple tips.
1. Have Someone Inspect Your Building Regularly
The problem with mold is that it tends to grow in dark, damp areas of buildings. You may not visit every single corner of the building frequently, so you should hire someone to come out and inspect things every so often. An annual inspection can help greatly, and a water damage restoration expert will know what to look for.
2. Decrease Moisture Levels
Depending on the city in which you do business, the air may be naturally humid all the time. This increases the chances of mold growth, but you can decrease humidity within your own building. You should consider installing a dehumidifier in rooms that are likely to have excessive moisture. Placing these items in the bathroom and basement can help tremendously.
3. Make Essential Repairs Quickly
Leaky roofs, cracked window frames and broken foundations can all increase the likelihood of mold developing. As soon as you realize a part of the building is damaged, you need to address it immediately. Even a small leak can lead to mold if you are not careful.
Ultimately, mold prevention is entirely dependent on remaining vigilant and taking care of any problematic issues as soon as they come up. It is much easier and much more affordable to prevent mold than to get rid of it. Your employees will thank you for being so proactive in addressing water damage. Important Tips To Know Before Using a Fire Extinguisher
2/14/2018 (Permalink)
Determining how best to handle a kitchen fire in a commercial building is vastly important anywhere, but it is crucial in a place as busy as South Jordan, UT. After all, trying to make such quick decisions in the heat of the moment can be difficult for some and nearly impossible for others. Learning even a couple essential tips for how to properly use a fire extinguisher can make all the difference, whether it is for something as simple as minimizing fire damage or as important as saving lives.
No one wants to face a fire, but accidents can happen at any time. When you’re forced into a situation where using an extinguishing tool is necessary, utilize these helpful tips:
1. Choose the right type of extinguisher. Unbeknownst to many, there are actually different kinds of extinguishers for specific types of fires. In the event of a fire raging out of control due to cooking oils and/or grease, the best extinguishers to use are either the foam option (marked with a yellow band) or the carbon dioxide option (marked with a black band).
2. Initiate the P.A.S.S. method. To learn how to correctly use an extinguisher, many use this common acronym to remember the steps necessary to correctly activate it. The steps are as follows:
• Pulling out the pin at the top,
• Aiming the hose or nozzle at the direct source of the blaze,
• Squeezing the extinguisher’s handle to release the agent and
• Sweeping in a back and forth motion to fully hinder the flames.
In the event of a dangerous kitchen fire, staying calm and remembering these key tips for properly using a fire extinguisher can lessen the anxiety and panic that arises in the stress of the moment. Such helpful information can be important for preventing further fire damage, lowering restoration costs down the road that could quickly become a hefty fee.

5 Tips To Keep Kids (or Irresponsible Adults) from Setting Your Kitchen on Fire
2/7/2018 (Permalink)
In South Jordan, UT you would prefer to avoid any sort of fire damage to your home, which is why you have that ban on anyone stepping foot into your kitchen who isn’t you. As time goes on, however, and you make friends or maybe even a family, it becomes increasingly more difficult to keep troublemakers out. Luckily, there are five easy tips to prevent you from having to meet a firefighter the embarrassing way:
1. Your kitchen should have a working fire extinguisher and smoke detector. Make sure smoke detectors are tested monthly and batteries replaced as needed. The fire extinguisher should be kept in a secure, but easily accessible place. Get 100 percent comfortable with how to use your extinguisher so that you can do so in the heat of the moment.
2. Avoid baggy clothing and draping sleeves. Aside from clothing catching fire, baggy clothing can result in tripping or getting caught on things, which is a fire risk as well.
3. Ensure flammable items and fabrics never sit too close to the stove. One of the best tips is to choose oven mitts over towels to move pots and pans from stovetops or oven.
4. To prevent a grease fire, clean your stove often to avoid buildup of grease in or around the stove. Always use proper-sized pots and pans for whatever you’re cooking, especially if you’re using cooking oil.
5. Never leave the house while cooking and avoid even leaving the room if possible. If children (or irresponsible adults) are in the kitchen, they should always be well-supervised. It is better to keep them away from the stove or oven, but at least ensure they are given one-on-one attention from an adult who is directing and standing close.
Fires in the kitchen may be difficult to entirely prevent, but armed with the right knowledge, you can keep them rare and more easily maintained. There are many resources out there to use so you can keep your home intact and don’t have commit to solitary cooking for the rest of your life. Utilizing the tips above, you should be ready to start allowing people into your kitchen again.

How To Prepare Your Business for a Flood
1/19/2018 (Permalink)
Extreme flooding can severely impact the daily operations of any business. Any commercial property owners in areas that are prone to flood damage need to develop comprehensive action plans and share those plans with all employees. Everyone needs to be aware of all evacuation routes and what to do in the event of a flood. With adequate preparation, your business in South Jordan, UT, can get back on its feet much sooner once the flood passes.
1. Back Up All Documents
Keeping physical copies of essential documents is important, but it is good to also save copies of all files on a flash drive in case something happens to the physical ones. Vital documents to back up include:
• State and federal tax returns
• Estate planning documents
• Medical records
• Insurance policies
Keep this flash drive in a safe place that could never be exposed to storm damage. You do not want to lose such critical documents
2. Clean Gutters
Maintaining a commercial building’s gutters is just as important as maintaining a residential house’s gutters. Severe flooding can cause the gutters to back up and break down. This can cause damage to the exterior of the building. It also poses a liability risk in case a collapsing gutter injures someone.
3. Keep Electronics Up High
When a flood warning is in effect, business owners need to keep an eye out for all developments. As the flood approaches a building, it is prudent to unplug all electronics and store everything up high to keep them away from any water. Staying up to date with any flood warnings in South Jordan, UT, will also let you know when you and all employees should evacuate.
4. Anchor Items in the Basement
The basement is typically where a company stores the water and fuel tanks. If you are unable to put these items in another room, then you should firmly anchor them in the basement according to your city’s codes. Flooding can significantly damage these items, and they are expensive to replace.

Dealing With Burst Pipes in the Winter
1/19/2018 (Permalink)
One of the toughest things to deal with as a homeowner is water damage from flooding. This can come in the form of storm water, sump pump failure or even burst frozen pipes. When the temperatures fall below freezing, you risk burst pipes unless you take the necessary precautions.
How To Prevent Burst Pipes
Preventing a broken pipe is the best policy. There are many ways you can do this, especially in the winter:
• Keeping your heat on
• Allowing your water to drip
• Adding extra insulation
If you take these steps, you can prevent your pipes from freezing, the pressure from building up in your water system and the pipes from bursting, resulting in water damage in your home.
When Repair Is Needed
When frozen pipes do happen, the best thing to do is arrange a water line repair as quickly as possible. Once the hole, crack or pipe is filled, repaired or replaced, the water stops flowing into your home. The sooner you accomplish this, the less water you’ll have to remove, and you’ll also be able to limit the damage.
After this, fast cleanup is essential. The faster you get the water and wet items removed from your home, the less mold growth you’ll experience. If the water is black water, you’ll need to throw away any porous items and disinfect anything that can be saved. Damage from less-contaminated water means you should be able to salvage more of your property.
A professional company in South Jordan, UT can help you determine the best way to clean walls, carpets and other types of flooring. They can also help restore your home to the way it was before the frozen pipes burst, allowing you to feel at home in your house again more quickly and easily, not to mention safely. Don’t delay repairing water damage; clean up after your disaster as soon as you can.

Saving Your Building From Mold After a Flood
11/30/2017 (Permalink)
Saving Your Building From Mold After a Flood
Few natural disasters are more devastating or cause more damage than a flood. In addition to water damage, a flood can also cause mold growth which poses a severe risk. Standing water is a breeding ground for bacteria, and the possibility of black water could contaminate nearly every item in the flooded building. When dealing with the aftermath of a flood in South Jordan, Utah follow these four steps to get rid of mold after a flood.
Remove Standing Water and Dry Out the Interior
Mold can begin growing as quickly as 24 hours after a flood. The faster all of the water is removed and the property is dried out, the less chance there is for mold growth. Even after mold has begun to grow, removing any dampness will hamper its spread.
Kill Bacteria
Once the building has dried completely, use a certified antifungal solution to kill the mold. By killing the bacteria before it can spread, this treatment can help control the mold and keep the problem manageable. The absence of standing water will help discourage the growth of mold, but an antifungal treatment may be able to help get rid of the awful smell of mold as it prevents it from growing.
Use a Mold-Control Solution
Although an antifungal solution may stop the growth of mold, it may not keep it from coming back in the future, especially if the building was not thoroughly dried out before treatment. A mold-control agent helps keep the mold from reoccurring.
Deodorize Your Property
Any kind of deodorizer can help you get rid of the smell of pesky mold. Using baking soda may be one of the best ways to remove the smell of floodwater from your property because it also absorbs any leftover dampness that could encourage mold to grow and spread. If the odor remains a problem, work with a water removal company for professional treatment.
Removing mold growth may be one of your top priorities if you have survived a flood in South Jordan, Utah. Standing water and bacteria contribute to this problem with an awful odor, and can even cause you to become seriously ill. Follow the steps above to remove mold from your building. 11/30/2017 (Permalink)
Sewer Backup Restoration
Sewer backup is a serious concern after a torrential downpour in South Jordan, Utah. Excessive rain water can overwhelm a sewer system and cause black water to backflow into a building.
Elimination of Standing Water After a Sewer Backup
One of the most vital steps to take after heavy rains resulting in sewage backflow is the proper removal of the contaminated water. If improper methods or equipment is used in the removal and disposal, serious illness can occur. Black water contains serious contaminants such as:
Bacteria
Viruses
Harsh chemicals
Mold spores
Disinfect and Deodorize
Once the standing water has been removed properly, you’ll want to take care to have the space properly disinfected and deodorized. Dehumidification, air filtration, mold containment, and proper storm damage restoration can bring your property back to safe and enjoyable standards after a flood.
Dehumidification can pull unseen water out of porous materials to allow you to continue use of those materials. Air filtration will remove mold spores and airborne contaminants from the air in order to eliminate spreading and inhalation. Mold containment will keep odors down and remove the possibility that you’ll need to replace or repair extensive portions of the structure due to mold colonization. All of these steps and more can restore your property and reduce the cost of flood damage repair.
Sewer back up due to excessive rain water can cause lasting damage if it is not handled promptly and properly. Take care to use a qualified professional to repair and restore your property after a flood. Visit http://www.SERVPROsouthjordannorthdraper.com for more information on commercial flooding.

How to Quickly Overcome Water Damage
Water damage is one of the biggest concerns when you have a flooded home due to a storm, a pipe break, a supply line break, or something else. Whether you have water in a home, water in a business, or something else, you have to work quickly. It's why it's recommended to contact a restoration company to help you with the water cleanup.
Focus on the Water
The water isn't going to leave your home or business quickly. Depending on just how much water you have, the water cleanup could require industrial pumps. This is one of the reasons why it's a good idea to contact a restoration company. They can help with the mitigation and focus on the water cleanup.
Without professionals, you might be drying things that cannot be saved. Additionally, when you have water in a home or water in a business, you might not have the tools to get the water out.
Save What You Can
The restoration process is important when you have water in a home or water in a business. The last thing you want is for the flood damage to ruin everything. The sooner you can get the water cleanup going, the easier it will be to focus on the restoration.
The mitigation will allow you to get the situation under control. Drying some things will allow you to salvage them. Other things cannot be saved by drying, especially if the flood damage is severe.
The more you allow the water to sit inside of the flooded home or business, the harder it will be to save everything. The water damage might be severe, which means you could lose a lot of items. Flooring, drywall, and more might night to be replaced. However, with professional drying, you might be able to salvage furniture, carpeting, and other items.
Determine the Reason for the Water in a Home or Business
Mitigation is an important process, but you have to find the reason for the water in a business or home. Otherwise, you could experience the problem all over again. If there was a pipe break or supply line break, you need to get the problem fixed. If there is a flooded home due to a storm, then you might want to look at how the water entered the home.
Often, if the damage is from a supply line break or a pipe break, you can get the repairs and then not have to worry about future issues with flood damage. However, you need to learn about the reason for the water invasion so you know you won't have a repeat problem in the future.
Repair and Restore
There might be some areas of the flooded home or business that are not able to be restored easily. When drying doesn't work, the damaged items need to be removed. This is what a restoration company can do once you have suffered a pipe break or supply line break.
Once all damaged items are removed due to the flood damage, you can focus on the repairs:
Fixing drywall
Installing new flooring
Fixing cabinetry
Repairing pillars
Every situation is different. The amount of restoration often depends on the amount of mitigation that was done as well as the level of water damage present. If there's no mitigation, then you can expect more water damage and a lot more restoration.
The best thing to do is involve a restoration company early on to salvage as much of the home or business as possible.

The response of the restoration company will depend in large part on what's causing water in the home or water in the business. Flood damage is a very common cause of a flooded home, but it's not the only thing that can cause water accumulation. A pipe break or supply line break, faulty appliance leaks, and overflowing plumbing can also cause water to accumulate on the floor and get on objects in the home or business. Restoration experts are licensed and certified to handle this crisis.

Professionals will take certain steps to make restoration possible.
Steps to solving the crisis

During this time, you can oversee the process or move to another location so that you can begin to deal with what has happened. In the case of flood damage in a flooded home, it's natural to want to stay at another location during the water cleanup. If it's simply a small pipe break or a supply line break, then you might stay on the scene until the problem is solved. For a small water cleanup, people often stay. For larger ones, such as with a flooded home that could leave flood damage, they might remove themselves during water cleanup and then return to assess what has been permanently damaged for insurance purposes.
Steps to water cleanup and restoration

2. Upon arrival, the restoration company will perform an inspection of your home or business. If the culprit of the water is an ongoing problem, such as a pipe break or a supply line break, the initial problem must first be fixed to stop the flooding and continue with mitigation and drying.
3. The restoration company will begin drying and dehumidifying the flooded home or business. Drying is an essential part of this process because effective driving will prevent permanent damage to the objects in your home or business. An important part of mitigation is always drying and preventing further permanent flood damage or damage from a supply line break or pipe break.
4. Now comes the best part: Cleaning and sanitation. If the water was dirty, you'll definitely need this step in order to have a completely restored area of your home or business. Flood damage especially can include very dirty water moving throughout the home or business. It's important to have a thorough cleaning and sanitation process.
5. Restoration is the final step of the process. Some items will have inevitably been damaged during the initial flooding. Whenever possible, a good mitigation company is going to restore all or as many as possible items to their original condition.

An In Depth Review Of The Mold Remediation Process
Mold damage is not only evident on a property; mold produces a smelly odor and can cause pollutants in the home. Many restoration companies understand mold and mold growth, and they have the required tools to remove the mold in homes. There is also commercial mold damage. The restoration companies ensure that they mitigate the mold damages before they become uncontrollable.
Before the restoration companies begin the remediation process, they first check for mildew which is a sign of mold growth. Mold removal then commences starting from the obvious areas such as mold growth behind walls.
Knowing Mold
Microscopic fungi spores occur naturally almost everywhere, especially in dry rot. The fungi can survive in both indoor and outdoor conditions. For this reason, mold removal in homes becomes impossible. Many restoration companies may promise complete mold removal, but this might be a fallacy.
Mold facts
• The fungi are everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Mold growth can occur anywhere
• Mold spores especially the black mold are microscopic, and they can float in the air. This gives them the ability to enter one's home through windows, doors or heating systems. Apart from the smelly odor an individual cannot recognize the fungi.
• Mold spores do well on moisture. When exposed to water mold growth happens fast. Mold growth behind walls is the most rampant after a water damage.
• Before the restoration company starts the mitigation process, all water sources or moisture should be addressed. Otherwise, the mold growth may return. The restoration company professionals will check for signs of any hidden fungus, mildew and dry rot before they start the removal.
• During mold removal, let the water lead the way. Smelly odors will also help in locating the mold problem areas. Ensure that deodorization is done as part of the process to counter the smelly odor.
• Mold growth in homes can survive in higher than normal humidity. The mold gives off a distinctive smelly odor that will help locate it. In cases of commercial mold damage, thorough checks are required in order to cover the usually vast areas and corners where mildew and fungi thrive.
The Mold Remediation Process
Each mold damage case is unique, and it requires different solutions, but the general process of mold remediation is similar in its nature. Commercial mold damage, however might cover a much wider scale than mold in home. It is therefore imperative that the restoration company covers all the restoration methods to include deodorization, dry rot and black mold checks and also check for patches of mold growth behind walls.
1. Emergency Contact
The initial process of restoration begins when one calls SERVPRO. The representatives at the mold removal and mitigation company will ask some questions to aid in determining the required equipment and personnel for the job. They will also use the information provided to know if deodorization is required during the process.
2. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
The restoration company professionals will visit the home and inspect any signs of mold. They check for mold behind all walls and use unique technologies to detect the mold in water sources. Since black mold is very specific, special tools are used to remove it.
3. Mold Containment
The removal and mitigation professionals use different procedures to prevent the spread of the mold in homes. The use of advanced containment procedures is deployed to quarantine the contaminated areas. They use physical barriers for the separation.
4. Air Filtration
The use of air filtration allows the professionals to capture microscopic mold spores. All the spores are filtered from the air. This will prevent the spread of the spores and fungus during the remediation process. After air filtration is done, deodorization is important to get rid of any smelly odors in both mold in home cases and commercial mold damage cases. The deodorization will make the restored areas habitable once again.
5. Getting rid of Mold and Mold- Infested Materials.
The entire remediation and mitigation process depends on the amount of mold and the type of places in which they appear. There is also the removal of mold and fungus infested areas such as drywall and carpeting. Dry rot and mold growth behind walls is thus eliminated.

If you do not want to struggle when restoring your flooded home, addressing the pipe break in the plumbing system is the priority. Besides restoring the property to the original condition, mitigation will prevent the recurrence of floods. Widening the channels and protecting the electrical system can keep your home safe if flooding occurs. It is vital to get the accurate flooding records from the local municipality before you begin the mitigation process.
Comprehensive cleanup
The flood damage in the office can cause several problems that might be quite expensive to repair. The restoration company will start by pumping the water in business floors before starting the sanitization process. Having a restoration company that can get rid of the water in business carpets as soon as possible can help you to minimize the flood damage. Since the flood damage can wreak havoc in the hidden areas, be sure to check for water in business crawlspaces too. Besides pumping all the water in business floors, you should also eliminate the moisture that saturates the air. Three Things You Must Know About Mold Growth
No mold is good mold, and no mold damage is good mold damage. Homeowners must know what to look for, how to identify mold, and who to call for mold removal. Remediation and mitigation are necessary, and there are steps people must take when mold is present. A restoration company is the first phone call home or business owners must make when they find mold growth in any capacity, and following the very strict instructions offered is another must. Mold is a problem, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Does mold cause health issues?
Yes. Mold causes health issues of various sorts. Mold is a fungus, and many people are allergic to fungus. When fungus is present at home or work, it can cause people with allergies or asthma to have difficulty breathing. If mold is present for a long time without remediation or mitigation, it can become toxic. Black mold is particularly dangerous, but it’s not just black mold people must worry about. It’s black mold and all other mold that causes health issues for those who live or work in it.
Many people wonder how mold is present for long periods of time without people noticing or calling for mold removal. It’s because mold growth behind walls is a real issue. When mold growth behind walls becomes a problem, many people have no idea commercial mold damage or mold in the home is a problem. They can’t see it. It might emit a smelly odor they use deodorization to handle, but it’s not evident.
It might be black mold, it might regular mold, but all fungus is a health issue. No one should allow mold to go ignored. Mold in the home and commercial mold damage are both dangerous to the health of almost anyone when it’s not professional handled.
Can mold be removed without professional remediation or mitigation?
No. Mold in the home nor commercial mold damage can be handled without professional mold removal with a restoration company on hand to offer remediation and mitigation services. Mold is dangerous, and it’s potentially toxic. No one should ever attempt to remove mold on their own without calling a restoration company.
A restoration company might not have an issue with home or business owners doing a few things to help before they arrive. It’s wise to ask the restoration company to outline anything people can do to make the job easier. They can turn off the HVAC. The air system moves air around buildings, which causes mold spores to move. It greatly assists the quick spread of mold spores.
If there is water damage in a home or office due to a major leak or flood, get the water out right away. The water removal process helps stop the spread of mold growth, and it helps stop mold growth and mold damage quickly.
How do I know if there is mold in the home or commercial mold damage?
Mold growth in the home or office is not without signs. Mold damage and mold growth might not always be noticeable to the naked eye if the issue is mold growth behind walls, but there are signs. A smelly odor is one sign. Deodorization helps, but it doesn’t get rid of the smelly odor. It’s safe to use deodorization for personal comfort, but not as a permanent solution. Remember the number one sign mold growth behind walls is a smelly odor deodorization only removes temporarily.
Dry rot is a sign of mold damage. Dry rot occurs when there is uncared for moisture present. Any sign of dry rot is a sign of potential mold growth or commercial mold damage. Dry rot doesn’t guarantee this fungus is present, but it’s a good sign it is present.
Mildew is another sign of mold. Mildew is a lot like mold. It requires certain environmental factors to grow, and they’re the same as mold requires. Humidity, moisture, and warmth are all things that allow mildew to grow. If mildew is present, mold might not be far behind it.
Calling a restoration company immediately is a great course of action. It helps homeowners combat mold issues, and it helps prevent health problems. No one should live with mold, and no one has to. It’s best to handle mold removal correctly the first time, and that’s what the pros are here to do.

Understanding Mold Removal, Remediation, and Deodorization

Understanding Mold Removal, Remediation, and Deodorization
Any business premises or home can become mold-infested causing both home and commercial mold damage. More often than not, the introduction of water sources like plumbing or roof leaks is all it takes. This is because mold is found everywhere. It is a fungus that can quickly grow from tiny spores in the air. Apart from moisture, mold in home thrives under temperatures ranging from 40 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Understanding Mold
Mold spores enter homes through doors, windows, air conditioning and heating systems, pets or even on clothing. It thrives in moist areas. Once exposed the spores grow into colonies and release more spores if mitigation measures are not taken. The colonies eventually start producing irritants, allergens, a smelly odor and cause mold damage. Mold can thrive indoors under a higher-than-normal humidity.
Since most homes are prone to mold infestation, the trick is to get ahead of any infestation before it becomes harmful to people and property. Mold mitigation is also recommended for businesses to prevent commercial mold damage. While it is easy to remove mild infestations as soon as they are detected, disturbing big colonies is bad for health. Therefore, it is advisable to call in professional help for mold removal, remediation, and deodorization.
Mold Damage
Mold is a common nuisance that discolors drywall, darkens decks, blackens grout lines in bathrooms, rots damp wood, and causes blacks spots on the siding. It is a health hazard because it releases to the air microscopic pores, which cause allergic reactions, irritating odors, sneezing, and running noses.
Identifying Mold in Home
Mildew is the most visible mold-type. It starts out as tiny black spots but grows into larger colonies visible in grout lines of tile floors, on walls, and surfaces found around damp areas. While mildew does not damage home structures, other mold types cause rot. A smelly odor can be used to detect a high concentration of mold and if this occurs, hiring a mold removal specialist is pertinent since deodorization may be required.
The Difference between Mold Remediation and Removal
Mold removal is simply the process of getting rid of infestations when they are spotted. However, since its microscopic spores exist naturally both outdoors and indoors, complete mold removal it is not possible. As a result, it is pertinent to carry out remediation and mitigation procedures, which reduce mold damage.
Mold Removal, Remediation, and Deodorization Process
It is essential to learn that assessing and inspecting mold infestation requires more than looking at visible signs of colonies. This invisible intruder can fester for a while before discovery. Therefore, it is important to anticipate potential growth around damp and moist areas to prevent mold damage.
After locating all possible mold infestations, document everything and come up with a remediation plan. Here, it is pertinent to indicate the full extent of fungus infestation correctly. For a mold removal company, documentation helps manage liability issues in case of commercial mold damage. It also assists in identifying growth trends. The cleanup and mitigation process comprises the following steps:
• The first step is repairing the moisture problem to prevent the growth of new spores.
• Isolate the entire contaminated area by closing all windows and doors. For level two infestations, the use of six mil polyethylene sheeting and duct tape is recommended.
• Suppress dust by misting the entire contaminated area.
• Remove any wet or mold-damaged porous materials. Place all materials in thick plastic bags.
• Clean all wood surfaces and non-porous materials with mildew or fungus. Use wire brushes, disposable wipes and then scrub the surfaces with a detergent solution before rinsing with clean water.
• Vacuum all surfaces using a HEPA vacuum, and later wipe them with a clean cloth. Deodorization is also recommended to remove smelly odor.
• Dry the entire area using fans, dehumidifiers or by raising the indoor temperature. By this time there should be no smelly odor and no sign of mildew, fungus, or mold in home.
Mold in home is a big problem and should be handled immediately to prevent property damage. For commercial mold damage or severe infestation at home, it is important to hire a professional company to handle the problem. Mold causes health problems and property damage if its colonies are left to grow.

Water Damage Problems and How to Solve Them
Water damage in homes can result from leaky dishwashers, overflow from washing machines, leaking pipes, or clogged toilets. Water damage can also result from flood water or storms. Flood water in a business premise, such as a hotel, can be caused by broken bathroom pipes, overflowing sinks, and runoff water from a storm.
What to do if you have water damage
Water damage can create massive damages to one's property when least expected. Several mitigation measures can be taken depending on the extent of destruction caused. Water damage mitigation is the process in which the damage caused by water is reduced after a flood. The mitigation process also helps to prevent further damage by taking appropriate actions.
Before contacting restoration experts, one should take the following measures after suffering the problem of flood water in your home:
• Stop the water at its source
• Electricity should be turned off.
• One should avoid walking on wet carpet
• Anything that can be spoiled by moisture should be removed from the wet areas.
• Hands should be washed after handling damaged items
• With flood water in your home, vacuuming should be avoided to avoid electrocution
• One should not walk on still waters to avoid electrocution or contamination.
Delaying mitigation services can result in more damage to one's property. For instance, flood water in a business premise can lead to significant losses as one misses out on customers. In addition to the losses, the property can be destroyed implying that one would need more money to restore the structures that were damaged by water. Similarly, flood water in your home will initiate decomposition of your wooden floors and furniture.
Flood damage can occur any time of the year and can cause catastrophic damage to one's property. Different projects can be undertaken to help protect property from it. For instance, it's imperative for one to understand his or her flood risk. With the knowledge, one can avoid floodplain areas or take steps that minimize risks of a flood damage. Knowing one's base flood elevation also helps one to consider building structures that are elevated to reduce chances of flood damage. In addition to ensuring that buildings' exposure to flooding is low, knowing the risk of flood damage can also help a person to consider purchasing flood insurance.
To minimize the damage that results from flood water in a business premise, the following steps are helpful:
• Raising of the electrical system to help reduce potential fire break out from circuits.
• Raising the heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) equipment or building a flood-proof wall around the equipment.
• Directing flood water away from one's property to prevent future damage
• Installing sewer backflow valves to block drain pipes and prevent water flowing back into the house.
After a flood, water cleanup is vital because it helps save parts of a property that have not been destroyed. Water cleanup should be done by certified technicians to stop any mold problem from arising. Mold can be dangerous if not keenly removed because it causes further damage to your house. Apart from destroying your home, mold can also cause severe allergic reactions. Professional water cleanup services also minimize the chances of contamination as water restoration companies use trained personnel.
How to undertake a water cleanup exercise at home after a flood
Flooding is a common natural disaster that strikes homes and businesses and is caused by natural disasters like storms or heavy rain. To recover from flood water in home, the basement, furniture, walls, appliances, floors, and ceilings should be checked as they are likely to be affected. The restoration of these areas should be handled by experienced water mitigation and restoration companies through a step-by-step process for the best results.
Firstly, an inspection is carried out to determine the best action needed to solve the harmful effects of a flood. Secondly, water is removed from all wet materials and places. The treatment of any wet surfaces to avoid contamination is done. Thirdly, drying and stabilizing is done. Equipment such as dehumidifiers and wood floor drying systems are used in this process to produce dry air and increase air circulation.
While drying, the environment is observed daily and results noted. The level of flood water in a business premise must be controlled to prevent mold growth. Drying may take 2 to 4 days depending on the materials being dried. The fourth process is re-assessment of the damage to make sure that all wetness has been removed. The fifth step is the reconstruction of the building and other items. The dwelling place should be safe and healthy after the reconstruction. How to Rebuild Your Home after a Home Fire
Fire is one of man's most useful inventions, but could also be his worst nightmare if it gets out of control. As the old saying goes, fire can be a good servant but a ruthless master. This is surprising because fire is the most common nightmare people fear when buying a home. Everybody knows that fire can occur at any given moment regardless of the home's condition, the age of the owner, or where they live. Fire cleanup is the only way to contain this disaster that knows no discrimination.
Fire cleanup is an expensive and time-consuming process, depending on the extent of the fire damage. However, the process of fire damage restoration can help rebuild the home to its original or even better condition. Here are a few tips to help fire damage victims out with that.
What to Do After Fire in a Home
Do not enter the house until the fire department declares it safe to do so. The goal is to minimize losses and salvage as much property as possible. Call your insurance provider immediately and collect relevant evidence from the scene. The company will send an adjuster to assess the damages in the house and try to determine the cause of the fire. You should consider fencing around the property to prevent further losses via theft or vandalism. Make temporary living arrangements for the members of the household until the house is fully restored and safe to live in. Depending on the terms of your policy, your insurer may be responsible for the provision of alternative residence.
Salvage Non Destroyed Items
In any fire disaster — whether its fire in a business or fire in a home — a significant part of the losses arise from smoke damage and soot damage. Damages from the actual flames are the most pronounced, though. Try to move non destroyed items to open ground and cover up the rest as smoke damage, as well as soot damage tend to continue even after the fire has been put out. Deodorization may be done to completely get rid of smoke smell. You can choose to conduct the fire cleanup yourself or call a professional fire damage restoration company depending on the extent of the damage. Fire cleanup after commercial fire damage should be the hardest to conduct and should be handled by a professional.
Be Careful With the DIY Restoration Process
Should a homeowner choose to handle the smoke damage, soot damage, and other effects of fire by themselves, they should take the necessary precautions to throughout the fire damage restoration process. However, commercial fire damage should only be handled by the professionals. The smoke smell is one of the hardest effects of fire to deal with. Leave doors and windows open to get rid of the smoke smell completely, which could take weeks. Air quality is one of the biggest determinants of a safe environment. The presence of smoke smell signifies impure air and hence not safe.

We don't just deal with damages caused by a fire in the home, because we deal with both residential and commercial fire damage. That way we can be sure to account for everything in the costs of the final fire cleanup.
The consequences and fire loss are never an open and shut case. With most fire in home investigations there are the material losses, but the home can be rebuilt or renewed in the process of fire cleanup. Soot damage, smoke damage, and all commercial fire damage has its tell tale clues, that often lead to criminal investigations. Time has shown us that fire in home or fire in business maybe just part of the story.
Another important factor of the rebuilding process of fire cleanup is air quality. The overall air quality of a property maybe impacted, even after the fire damage has been repaired, this is not satisfactory. Act Fast After Fire Damage
If there is a fire in a home or fire in a business, there is little time to waste after the fire has been contained and extinguished. Fire cleanup should never be attempted until the area has been declared safe for entry as fire damage can cause a host of problems, both structural and air quality wise. After the insurance company has been notified, it is up to the owner of the building that had the fire in the home or fire in a business to start coordinating the fire cleanup process.
Smoke damage makes everything where the fire happened smell awful, and the fumes from smoke damage are harmful to inhale. However bad the air quality smells the invisible fumes still lingering are much worse. If a fire in home or fire in business happens, it's tempting, as an amateur to try to mitigate the fire loss by trying to clean soot damage from furniture and walls. Best Restoration: A commercial fire damage company can evaluate if items that underwent fire damage can be saved. Many items that seem without hope can be restored by a commercial fire damage company. Whether you had fire damage in the home or fire damage in the business, it's important to restore all that can be saved during fire cleanup. Water Loss and Restoration in South Jordan and North Draper, UT
Living in places that experience frequent torrential rains and floods can lead to heavy losses associated with water damage. Everything in your house or workplace is at risk of damage. Since we cannot control the weather, it is better to be armed with the knowledge of how to handle water loss, especially if you are living in South Jordan and North Draper, UT.
Due to recent changes in weather patterns in Utah, it is becoming increasingly impossible to predict the weather correctly. We have witnessed places that have been hit with more than average rains that lead to floods. If you find yourself in such a situation, what do you do?
If you have toddlers and small children in your house, relocate them to higher ground away from the water. Seniors and sick people as well would need your assistance. This high ground should be dry and safe as well.
When your house is flooded with water, try to secure all your valuables. Start with the ones who are most vulnerable, like your documents and electronics. Documents would include your certificates or any other legal documents that are made of paper. This will help reduce the number of valuables destroyed by flood damage.
Walls can hold water for a long period. Wet walls must be removed at least at the level of the flood. If you find it impossible to remove the wall, you can dry it by drilling holes to increase both air movement and circulation. Cutting the wall will help reduce the formation of fungi contamination which might happen when the area of the wall dries up. If your walls contain fiberglass, you must remove it and check the metal track for any accumulation of water.
In case the water has touched your ceiling tiles, you should dry them or completely remove them, depending on the severity of the damage. In an example of the electric circuit on the walls, you should let qualified electricians inspect them.
Drying your carpet and other floor-related accessories should be considered. If the carpet’s damage is beyond repair, consider replacing it.
The above damages might not be caused by heavy rains alone. They can be caused by leaking pipes, broken sinks or accidents of water in a home. As this might also be seen as a home problem, water in business can also be a problem. Having a mitigation plan can subsequently reduce any damages of water in home or business.

§ Divide Your Workspace Into Zones:
Determine how you want and need to use the space and set up zones for your daily functions. You may require a workspace for your computer, a library area for your research, a storage area for supplies and a filing area for your archives. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.
§ Keep Only What You Need at Arm’s Length:
Boxes of pens, stacks of papers and old coffee cups need to go. Rid your desk of visual clutter by paring down the items on top to the essentials only. Supplies, paperwork and personal items should be kept in the zones you’ve established for them.
§ Sort Your Catch-All Drawer:
Use drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Go through the drawer every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn’t being used.
§ Eliminate Digital Clutter:
Digital clutter can be just as stressful as physical clutter. Organize digital files and your e-mail inbox just as you would paper fi les–with a system of logical and clearly labeled folders. Also, keep the icons on your desktop to a bare minimum, and trade in sticky notes on your monitor for calendar reminders.
§ Create A Daily Paper System:
Consider creating hanging files or baskets labeled “To Read,” “To Do,” and “To File.” Establish set days for each, so that you don’t get behind or feel the overwhelming need to do everything at once.
§ Disinfect Regularly:
Prevent the buildup of dust, dirt, food stains and fingerprints. Wipe down your desk, phone, keyboard, and monitor once a week with disinfecting wipes.

Avoid Holiday Hazards

Did you Know?
December is the peak time of year for home candle fires.
Candles, pretty lights and decorations are just a few of the items that add to the charm and cheer of the holiday season—however, if they are not used carefully your holidays may go from festive to frightening very quickly.
Review the following simple safety tips, provided by the National Fire Protection Association, to greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.
* Two out of five home decoration fires are started by candles. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns.
* Use sturdy candle holders that are not likely to tip over and place candles on clear, uncluttered surfaces. Consider using flameless candles instead of real candles.
* Make sure your tree and decorations are at least three feet away from heat sources like fi replaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents.
* Make sure you have the correct type of lights for your desired decor. Some lights are designed for only indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
* Carefully inspect light strands before placing them. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of light sets.
* Remember to turn off outside decorative lights and Christmas tree lights before leaving or going to bed.
* Get rid of your tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program.
* Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.
SERVPRO® West Jordan, South Jordan, and Draper Professionals wish you a safe and happy holiday season!
